Continuing traffic demands for increased capacity in Metro/Regional networks drive the need for new platforms that converge packet and optical layers to reduce cost and complexity in next generation transport networks. Xtera’s Metro/Regional product line provides a carrier class transport portfolio for this market, and proven expertise in Packet Optical Networking and ROADM technology.

The Xtera Metro/Regional products offer support for typical metro networks, where each site is within a few city blocks of each other (typically less than 5 -10 km apart), but also support network configurations that link multiple metro networks together or span multiple cities or municipalities (10 to 160 km between optical add/drop sites).

For Metro applications, Xtera offers a wide range of optical pass-through filters, multiplexing and muxponding options, and either digital or optical ROADM solutions, which offer high levels of flexibility in building whatever low-cost Metro network configuration is required, including linear, ring, mesh, or ring-interconnect configurations.

For Regional applications, Xtera products also support a selection of integrated EDFA cards, and external shelf-mounted EDFA solutions with dispersion compensation, to support links ranging from high-loss 80km links to 170km unrepeatered spans. Multi-site amplified links can extend to over 1200 km per WDM span, to support extremely large regional network configurations. With these fully managed EDFA-based amplifiers and Raman amplifiers, the Xtera metro optical transport products are often deployed as highly cost-effective regional networks, or as regional extensions to Xtera’s ultra long-haul, long-haul or submarine network solutions.

For hybrid metro/regional network deployments, the Xtera products offer
Multi-degree WDM, integrated and external mounted optical amplifiers (EDFAs), managed Raman optical amplifiers, and proven ROADM technology. The Xtera Metro/Regional products (for example the 3300 OSM, 5400 OTP, 6400 OTP and 7200 OSP), offer the low cost of a Metro solution, but offer powerful options to extend the network as required with the longer reach, high-reliability, and high-capacity of a Regional solution.

The Xtera Metro/Regional product solutions offer a feature-rich selection of TDM sub-rate multiplexing, transparent WDM, or packet optical transport options to extend the Metro network where required, providing Regional network extensions to remote sites, or a complete Regional network solution.
